The Pontiac Area Vicariate is thrilled to present distinguished bioethicist Fr. Mark Miller sharing his wisdom and experience on difficult end-of-life decisions. Keeping our Catholic faith in the forefront, this evening will provide a practical guide to the use of technology, advance directives, ordinary vs. extraordinary means and other complex ethical choices.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Fr. Miller was ordained a Redemptorist priest in 1975 after studies in Winnipeg, Toronto and West Germany. In 1981 he joined the Redemptorist Mission Team and spent seven years preaching across Western Canada. In 1992, after four years at the University of Notre Dame, he received his doctorate in Christian Ethics. Upon returning to Canada, he was appointed the director of the newly formed Redemptorist Bioethics Consultancy.

Fr. Miller worked for 16 years as a clinical bioethicist at St. Paul’s Hospital and the Catholic Health Association of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. His work took him across Canada, as well as to Ireland, England and the United States. He has taught and provided workshops at Catholic Colleges, in adult formation programs, for Catholic teachers, and many health care practitioners. He is currently the provincial of the English-speaking Redemptorist province of Canada, and continues to work as an ethicist at the Centre for Clinical Ethics at St. Joseph’s and St. Michael’s Hospitals. He has a particular passion for parish nursing and for palliative/hospice care and the ethical issues that surround care for the dying. Fr. Miller is the author of books and numerous articles on Bioethics.
